Imaginary response of a famous cinematographer to a real question

Q: Everyone now expects greatness from you!

A: Look, it’s not… it doesn’t… get any easier. It doesn’t flow from your fingertips. Certain things get easier. Technical things get easier. Your eye gets refined. But it’s not like you get to a point where you can do it without thinking. To come up with meaningful visuals - visuals absolutely dedicated to the material - always takes time, thought, and hard work. You might, over your career, build up so much experience and such an expansive mental database of creative and technical solutions that their application is effortless, but the intellectual force behind that application will never work effortlessly. So it’s perfectly possible for me to point a lens at something and get garbage. What stands between that and the metaphorical mountain peak? Nothing but the net of hard work and thought you never finish knitting. What is the mountain built of? Luck, more hard work and thought, and maybe some talent, whatever that may be other than the sum of the aforementioned.
